 SPATIAL ANALYSIS IN A GIS ENVIRONMENT
Researchers have explored a variety of approaches for extending the spatial analytic capabilities of GIS. These approaches can be broadly characterized as tight, close, and loose coupling strategies; each of these approaches has its advantages and disadvantages. This research investigates the possibilities for extending the spatial analytic capabilities of ArcView 3.0, a GIS software product, through tight, close, and loosely coupled integration strategies. As a context for this investigation, the paper examines employment patterns in the Greater Los Angeles Region. By demonstrating tools and techniques for analyzing, displaying, and visualizing spatial employment data, this study supports the UCGIS call for research dealing with spatial analysis in a GIS environment.
